This provides a cheap alternative to expensive drugs without the fears of harmfull side effects and supports earlier research into the benefits of Potasium rich foods. A study conducted in 1997 concluded that a person would have to eat at least five bananas a day to have any measurable benefit. However since then doctors in Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India have discover a fall in blood pressure in patients who ate only two bananas a day.
The team, who's results were published in Indian medical journal Current Science, reported that natural compounds in bananas acted in a similar manner to anti-hypertensive drugs. The also discovered that ripe bananas had a stronger effect than unripe ones. The earlier study was carried out at the Jophn Hopkins University in the USA, they underlined the importance of Potaium in regulating fluid balance. They recommended a daily intake of 2300 mg of Potasium - about five bananas - would be of benefit
